Overview

Backrooms VR is a horror exploration game for VR. The player moves through a series of unsettling backroom levels, each adding new challenges and entities to evade on the way to an exit.

My role

  • Level layout and asset placement
  • Audio and lighting
  • Monster model, edited in Blender
  • Enemy AI: NavMesh navigation and finite state machine code

The challenge

Horror in VR depends on what the player cannot see. The levels had to stay readable enough to navigate with a flashlight while keeping the entity a constant, unpredictable threat.

Implementation

  1. 01

    Finite state machine AI

Enemy behaviour is controlled by a finite state machine written in C#.

  2. 02

    Navigation

The entity moves through each level using Unity's NavMesh navigation.

  3. 03

    Light and sound

A flashlight cone, sparse ceiling lights and audio do most of the storytelling.

  4. 04

    Environmental guidance

Wall markings and drawn arrows direct the player toward the exit of each level.

Design process

How the design developed: references, sketches, greyboxing, iterations and what changed along the way. Process images and diagrams fit here.
